The Sami Spirit Calendar features the original artwork
of
visionary Sami American artist
Kurt Seaberg,
whose intricate line
drawings are
combined with insights and historical knowledge about Sami culture to
make this not only a calendar, but The calendar's 12 beautiful and intimate portraits are drawn from Kurt's travels in Sápmi, and reflect research into his own heritage and the culture, history and struggles of the Sami, the indigenous people of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and the Kola Peninsula of Russia. With its beautiful imagery and carefully researched details, each month becomes an intimate encounter with the fascinating history and cultural richness of the Sami people, who have lived in the area commonly referred to as Lapland for thousands of years. Today there are between 70,000 to 100,000 Sami - the largest concentration is in Norway. Traditionally the Sami are a semi-nomadic people, with a culture revolving around reindeer herding, hunting, and fishing. |
